Implant add-on

Bone grafting and dental implant cost

Bone grafting can change both the cost and timeline of implant treatment. Here is what to ask before comparing quotes.

Why bone grafting enters the implant conversation

Dental implants need adequate bone support. Mayo Clinic notes that if the jawbone is too thin or soft, grafting may be needed to create a stronger foundation before or during implant placement.

Does a graft add another treatment stage?

Sometimes. Mayo Clinic notes that transplanted bone may need several months to grow enough new bone to support an implant. Minor grafting may sometimes be done at the time of implant placement.

Why we do not publish one graft price

“Bone graft” can mean very different procedures and materials. A socket-preservation graft is not the same case as rebuilding a severely deficient ridge or performing a sinus augmentation. The most useful quote is one tied to imaging and a defined procedure.

Questions to ask

  • What grafting procedure is being proposed?
  • What material will be used?
  • Can it be done with implant placement or as a separate stage?
  • How does it change the timeline?
  • Is the graft included in the quoted implant package?
How we source costs: Published U.S. benchmarks on this site use CareCredit's dental-cost dataset; the Medellín comparison uses a Dental Departures marketplace snapshot. Clinical process and risk information is cross-checked against Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and peer-reviewed literature. Read the methodology →
